Ordered by what breaks, not by alphabet
Most change-of-address lists are one long alphabetical run of forty organisations. That is a list you start and abandon, because there is no way to tell what matters.
This one is grouped by consequence:
Before you move — utilities and insurance. These are not notifications; they are arrangements that have to be in place. Insurance in particular must not have a gap, because both properties want cover on the overlap day and moving damage gets claimed under one of them.
First week — anything that fails or costs money if the address is wrong. Cards get declined on a billing address mismatch, prescriptions cannot be filled at a pharmacy that does not have you, and licence deadlines have started running.
First month — everything else, which is most of it, and which is much easier to do in one sitting than to remember in pieces.
Forwarding is not telling people
Postal forwarding is genuinely useful and it is not a substitute for the list.
It expires — usually after a year. It does not cover every carrier’s packages. It does nothing at all about the two most common real problems, which are a card being declined because the billing address does not match, and an insurer discovering after a claim that they were insuring a property you no longer live at.
Use forwarding as a net that catches what you missed. Then, a fortnight after moving, look at what it caught: anything still arriving at the old address is something you forgot.
The state-line items with real deadlines
Crossing a state line adds obligations with statutory clocks on them:

The figures vary enough that quoting one number would be wrong. Look up the state you moved to — this is one of the few things on this site with an actual penalty attached to getting it wrong.
The ones people forget
- The pet microchip registry. Only useful if the number resolves to a phone you still answer. This is the single most consequential forgotten item on the list.
- Anywhere holding a will, a deed or a power of attorney.
- Subscriptions that ship on a schedule rather than ones you visit.
- Standing charitable donations, which will happily continue for years.
- A gym you have now moved away from, which will also happily continue for years.
Print it as a table
The table layout has an account-number column and a confirmed column, and both earn their space. Address changes fail silently — you tell someone, it does not take, and you find out when something is returned three months later. A confirmed column means you know which ones you actually verified rather than which ones you meant to do.
Keep the sheet with the moving folder rather than in a box, and add lines to the blank table at the bottom as post turns up at the old address.
Do the insurance first. It is the only item on the list where a gap of a single day can cost more than the entire move.
